When and where does the club meet?
The
Mid-Cities SCRABBLE Players Club meets every Tuesday evening (except
holidays) at 6:45 p.m. at Taco Bueno, 1528 Brown Trail, Bedford TX 76021.
Our players' skill levels range from novice to expert,
and about everywhere in-between. Some of our players are "competitive"
and there are also players who don't play in tournaments and just play
for sheer enjoyment.
How much does it cost, and are there prizes?
We pay $2 per night to play. Most of that goes toward providing a site for our annual tournament, which is held in September.
Each night, except the last night of the month, there is a $1 prize for the person who gets closest to the random magic score.
Each night a player attends, he puts his name into a box for a drawing for a month-end drawing for a $5 prize.
On
each player's birthday month, he receives a birthday card with a
certificate for one free club night to be used whenever he wishes.
How many people per game, and how many games per night?
We
have two players per game and play three games per night. Occasionally
a player comes late and only plays the last two games, or he may have
to leave early and only plays the first two games.
What do I bring?
You may bring your deluxe board if you wish, although we usually have enough available.
Who is the director?
Our director and co-directors are Mary Rhoades, Dee Segrest and Kate Watson. Mary was one of the founders of the club in 1983.
All directors are certified by the North American SCRABBLE Players Association (NASPA) and direct tournaments as well.
Is the club associated with a national organization and to I need to become a member?
Our
club, NASPA Club #248, is sanctioned by the North American SCRABBLE
Players Association. We use the word lists approved by NASPA, as well
as agreeing to abide by the tournament and club rules set forth in the
official Rules Manual.
It is not necessary to join NASPA unless
you want to play in NASPA-sanctioned tournaments. Annual membership in
NASPA is $30, but a person who plays in a tournament for the first time
can purchase a trial six-month membership for $15.
