Meet Our Players
In Memoriam

It's not hard to prepare to come to a club session for your first experience at organized SCRABBLE. In fact, it's not even necessary to prepare, so you can skip this session if you like. Most of our members joined without any preparation at all.

If you do want to prepare a little, here's what you can do:

  • Start by at least skimming the Basic Word Lists found on this page. Start with the two-letter words, as they are the most important for new players to learn.

Two more handy lists are the Q Without a U list and the No-Vowel Word List.

  • Next, get in the habit of making a move within a short time.  You can use a common household timer if you wish, or a watch with a second hand, or even set your cell phone count-down timer. Practice making plays within three minutes.

You might even set a kitchen timer for 50 minutes and using one rack, just play tiles until they are gone. you will get a good sense of how long our games last, and soon you will be able to pace yourself to finish a game within your 25-minute allotment!
  • Finally, practice playing a game where both players keep score and stay silent through the game, except to announce their score for a move or a designating blank letter. This will help you become accustomed to a competitive environment.
